Capture all charges, in and out of the office. Know the difference between bundled services and non-covered services and when you can and should bill the patient.
Embrace the concept of medical necessity. Medical necessity is like beauty: it is in the eye of the beholder. If the payer doesn’t agree it is medically necessary, the practice won’t be paid.
Second set of eyes always help. Set up an internal or external review process to check assumptions and coding accuracy.
Step up the accuracy of your diagnosis coding. Risk based contracts, accountable care organizations and ICD-10 all demand it.
